	Salut la Kora Family! Vous êtes nombreux à me contacter pour me demander quels sont les modes d'accordage de la kora. En plus des infos que vous pourrez trouver sur le site, voici celles que je peux vous apporter. Ces renseignements proviennent de mon expérience personnelle mais surtout de l'étude exhaustive sur la kora réalisée par Ousmane Sow Huchard pour la préparation de sa thèse de doctorat en anthropologie et sciences humaines. A ma connaissance, il existe 3 modes d'accordage utilisés par les griots du Mandingue: - "Le Sila Ba" (la grande route) est le principal mode d'accordage utilisé par les griots, c'est le mode le plus anciens qui est à l'origine de tous les autres. En Sénégambie certains korafola appellent ce mode "Kéléfa Ba" en mémoire du grand guerrier kaabunké (du royaume du Gaabu), défenseur des korafola, Kéléfa Saané et d'autres l'appellent "Tomora Ba". Si on rapproche l'accordage traditionnel de l'accordage occidental, on obtient les notes suivantes à la main gauche (de haut en bas): Fa1, Do2, Ré2, Mi2, Sol2, Sib2, Ré3, Fa3, La3, Do4 et Mi4 et à la main droite: Fa2, La2, Do3, Mi3, Sol3, Sib3, Ré4, Fa4, Sol4 et La4 Cet accordage correspond à une gamme occidentale de Fa majeur. - "Le Tomora" est sans conteste traditionnellement le deuxième mode d'accordage des griots. Ce mode d'accordage est sutout utilisé en Gambie et est appelé parfois "Tomora Mesengo". Au Sénégal oriental il est aussi appellé "Diaka". Ce mode comporte plus d'altérations, le La2, La3 et La4 deviennent respectivement Lab2 (ou Sol#2), Lab3 et Lab4. Il en est de même pour les trois Mi qui se transforment eux aussi en Mib. Les autres notes sont les mêmes que celles du Sila Ba. Ce mode correspond à une gamme occidentale de Mib majeur. L'intérêt principal de ce mode c'est qu'il permet de jouer facilement en mode Dorien (Fa mineur). Essayez le, il est fantastique. - Le troisième mode est appelé soit "Ardino", "Hardino", "Xardino+" ou encore "Sawta" ou "Sauta". Ousmane Sow Huchard indique que tous les témoignages recueillis auprès des griots de donnent pas une dénomination identique pour ce mode. Ce mode est surtout utilisé au Mali et en Guinée. Beaucoup de korafola ne le considèrent pas comme un mode d'accordage, d'autres plus catégoriques encore affirment que Sawta n'est pas un mode d'accordage mais un morceau joué pour les cordonniers. Les notes de ce mode sont donc celles du Sila Ba sauf que Sib2 et Sib3 deviennent respectivement Si2 et Si3 ce qui nous donne une gamme occidentale de Do majeur. Donc pour résumer: Sila Ba = Fa majeur Tomora = Mib majeur Sawta = Do majeur Voilà, j'espère que ces renseignements vous aideront pour l'apprentissage de votre instrument préféré !!! Après la kora "SWATA" à chevilles de violoncelle, la kora "TOMORA" équipée avec des mécaniques de guitare et basse, voiçi la toute dernière sortie de l'atelier : La kora "SILA BA"... Cette nouvelle kora est équipée uniquement avec des mécaniques de basse mais ce n'est pas là son intérêt majeur... La nouveauté c'est "l'accordage opposé" qui permet d'accorder avec la main droite les cordes jouées par la main gauche et vice versa. 	Salut Kaelig Felicitation pour ton travail, tu fabriques de tres beaux instruments modernes ! Je possede deja une kora que j ai ramené du Mali, j ai fait changer le manche pour avoir des cles mais elles ne sont pas de bonnes qualite. Du coup les cordes ne sont pas assez tendues ! Maintenant j aimerai m en fabriquer une autre ! Il ne manque plus que le manche avec des cles a bain d huile... J aimerai donc connaitre tes tarifs et savoir ou tu habites. If you remember David, he sale djembe bags and he know well the guy who make them in burkina. This guy make n'goni bags really good. 	Si tu cherches un Kameln'goni, tu peux faire une recherche sur ebay. Le vendeur 'balanfola' (fabrice) peut te fournir de superbes instruments. Si tu es en Belgique, il y a une possibilité de s'en fournir via un importateur de ce vendeur. Si c'est le cas, contacte-moi. Aurais-tu des infos sur des patoches de Goni ? J'étudie cet instrument depuis deux mois et je suis preneur de toute info...

	Réponse à l'annonce de Kaelig, je lui ai acheté la Kora à mécaniques de guitares, celle à 600 Euros, qui les valent largement, travail soigné et réel effort de construire un instrument que l'on aime jouer, la preuve, je débute et j'y passe 4 heures d'affilée sans m'en rendre compte, le son est nickel (cordes qualibrées=dynamique équilibrée des basses aux aigus, en passant par les médiums bien sûr), en bref du travail de professionnel pour un prix trés raisonnable, ses Kora sont en plus trés originales par rapport à ce j'ai pû voir en Kora à clés (utilisation de mécaniques de basses pour les trois premières cordes) type de manche propre à sa construction j'imagine, tenue de l'accordage irréprochable. Reste plus qu'à bosser pour ma part!!héhé!! salut.

	Bonjour la kora family ! La kora à 600€ est vendue ! Le modèle exposé sur myspace sera en vente à la fin du mois (le temps d'en fabriquer une nouvelle !). Je l'ai testée pendant 3 mois, elle est stabilisée et c'est du "top qualité" !!! Calebasse (38,5 x 46,5 cm) montée avec une peau de cerf parcheminée de première qualité, Poignées et traverse en padouk faites par un tourneur sur bois, chevalet Kaëlig en érable, cordier Kaëlig n'entravant pas les vibrations de la peau monté avec de la drisse 4 mm, manche en padouk avec sillets en laiton (actuellement le manche est monté avec des chevilles de violoncelle en ébène, je peux installer un manche avec des mécaniques à bain d'huile et pose de filets d'érable), cordes calibrées. 	Bonjour, J'ai acheté un N'Goni il y a quelques semaines. Je suis à la recherche de partitions traditionnelles pour ce magnifique instrument. J'ai acheté le logiciel Jaliya qui dispose de quelques partitions. Si quelqu'un a des infos intéressantes pour moi, outre le rythme Sinté (disponible en PercussionStudio), je suis disposé à échanger le peu dont je dispose pour pouvoir étoffer ma connaissance. J'ai vraiment soif de mieux découvrir cet instrument. I'm looking for Kamalengoni lessons/notations. I bought my kamalngoni (10 strings) a few weeks ago. I just find the rythms that are present in the software Jaliya and a rythm called 'Sinte' in PercussionStudio software. I also have some rythms that I found in some books about Manding Music. I would like to share information on N'Goni too. If someone could help me...

	Bonjour, Pas tout à fait d'accord avec Nick, la différence fondamentale entre une kora avec des anneaux de cuirs et une kora à mécaniques est pour la deuxième la facilité de l'accordage. Une légère différence de son peut être perceptible avec une kora montée avec des chevilles type violoncelle car la vibration de la corde se transmet via la cheville au manche. Ce qui va intervenir directement pour le son c'est la qualité et la tension de la peau qui joue le rôle de table d'harmonie, le diamètre et la profondeur de la calebasse qui est la caisse de résonance, la découpe du chevalet et la qualité du montage de l'instrument. Ne pas oublier non plus la qualité des cordes, des cordes calibrées en fonction de la fréquence voulue pour chaque note permet une tension et un équilibre plus juste. Je fais de la vente de koras (voir mes précédents messages) mais je suis surtout luthier kora (entre autre: guitares, percussions mandingues....). 	Bonjour la kora family ! Un client m'a déposé une kora à l'atelier pour que je la mette en vente (il n'a pas internet et bouge beaucoup !). C'est une kora montée avec un manche traditionnel qui a été modifié pour l'installation de chevilles en ébène, les sillets sont en bois. la calebasse n'est pas d'un grand diamètre (43 x 34 cm)montage de peau traditionnelle, cloutage, le fond de la calebasse est pyrogravée (carte d'Afrique avec les points cardinaux + 1 arbre, 1 palmier et 3 étoiles). La kora est montée avec des cordes calibrées (sauf le FA 1 qui est un peu faible, mais je peux fournir une corde en 2,4 mm si besoin). J'ai retouché son chevalet, la sonorité est bonne pour une kora qui n'a pas la prétention de rentrer dans la catégorie professionnelle haut de gamme ! Je pense qu'elle peut faire le bonheur d'un débutant qui recherche une kora à clefs pour pas trop cher ! Tiens ! D'ailleurs, le prix de vente : 200 € ! En ce qui me concerne, je ferai une retouche concernant l'esthétique: - Changement des drisses, - Nettoyage complet, en particulier des clous... Voila, vous avez toutes les infos ! 	Du plus petit au plus grand, je monte: 55,55,60,60,60,70,70,70,80,80,80,90,90,100,100,120,120,140,140,160,240. Pour les plus gros diamètre selon la région ou tu es c'est dur de trouver du fil de pêche, tu peux alors remplacer par du cable pour rotofil (débroussailleuse) que tu trouveras dans n'importe quel magazin de bricolage. 	On travaille tous avec du fil de pêche,ça sonne et ça t'évitera de te ruiner pour un résultat incertain. Il y a des fabriquants de cordes nylon spéciale mais ça coûte très cher et je trouve le son trop brillant, moins chaleureux, donc à toi de voir.

	Hi, you probably have this sorted by now but yes I've been running Jaliya v4 on Virtual pc 6 on a powerbook 1.5ghz 1.5G ram. its slightly clunky but certainly useable. a bit of a timing bug but not enough to upset its running. the new macbook pros may run it straight without an emulator as the windows section is built in - id check that first with those that know well though!

	Alhaji Bai Konte died in 1982. His son Dembo Konte is living in Brikama, Gambia. Besides his solo CD "Jato" or "Kora melodies from the Gambia" there are at least 2 LPs of him together with Dembo Konte and Malamini Jobarteh. See discography page.

	try to get a Kora from a musician or instrument maker rather than from a shop, as they can play it for you to hear if it sounds ok prices in Europe may vary from 300€ to more than 1000€ for a Keur Moussa Kora, in Gambia or Senegal you may get one for 100€ or even less, some quality criteria: tuning rings must fit tightly but still be moveable, bridge must be in the middle in between the two handles with enough space for your fingers to reach each string easily, string notches in the bridge must be sufficiantly apart so that the deep strings don't touch the neighbor strings when being played, highest strings must not touch the edge of the calabash construction of all parts of the instrument must be stable and symmetrical hide must fit the calabash very tightly like a drum skin sound must be very nice of course !!!

	I think I found a very good kora, thanks to your advice ! Just one problem : it's pretty hard to tune and the tuning rings often move down :-/ Even when I put some sugar it's still detuning ! I was thinking that I could put a wood varnish on the handle : it will be thicker and more adhering so the tuning rings move less ! Do you think it's a good idea ?

Écoutez le kora avec un piano et réellement le son et l'harmonie entre eux était fabuleuse. Most of them are almost forgotten or even being played very rarely. It is quiet shocking. In fact the youth of griot or other griots said, "why should I play the old stuff...", wheter the roots of the Manding culture gets destroyed or not, they even do not think further. 	Reza, tu devrais si tu ne peux pas te rendre toi même au Sénégal ou t'en faire ramener une direct de là bas te mettre en contact avec les moines de l'abbaye de Solesme (entre Laval et Tours). 	This realy is a great website. I love the Kora since I was 15 years old, and I'm 60 now. I started learning to play in the Casamance in 1998,and got my first instrument there, an old one from my teacher. I visit my friends there every year. December last year, I had a new one made by Alieu Susso in Bakou, the Gambia. Beautifull sound ! I try to find other people in Holland who can play the Kora, or want to learn it. I shall never be a real Griot, but I can help other people to start.

	Dear Sir/Madam I am currently in my final year of a teacher-training degree, studying in Liverpool UK. Because I am taking music as a specialist subject, I have decided to write a dissertation on the role of traditional music in West African society. I wish to include a section on Western and commercial influences on traditional West African music. For example, to what extent does the media affect or influence general listening habits? Has the availability of different types of music (both African and non-African) meant that traditional music is now marginalized? Are the younger generation encouraged to play traditional instruments or are Western instruments more popular? Are they encouraged to participate in traditional rituals and ceremonies e.g. is the role of the master drummer in Akan or Anlo-Ewe societies for example as important as it was? To what extent does family life influence a person’s exposure to traditional West African music (e.g. the passing on of customs, celebrations, passage rites etc)? How are traditions preserved in the face of ever-growing accessibility to technology? Does traditional West African music posses the same value as a method of communication and expression as it perhaps once did, and has its role in religious worship increased or diminished? I realise that here I have asked many questions, some of which may seem a little obscure (and perhaps slightly vague)! While I appreciate that a business such as yours is extremely busy, I would be very grateful for any assistance that any of your employees/visitors to your site could give me, in writing what I hope will be a worthwhile and educational dissertation on what I believe to be both a fascinating and important subject. 	I would like to know more about tuning. I have one tuning guide to the kora, in the key of F. It begins with an F more than an octave below middle "C", on the left. Then, again on the left, the next note is a 5th up, at "C" below middle "C". Then, again on the left it goes up one note, and another. The next note up is on the right (F). Then, back to the left, then right, alternating until the highest three notes, which are all on the right. You mentioned starting on "C". Is that on the left, and do the notes then alternate left, right, left right, until exhausted? Another email suggested starting on "D". I do not know if the notes then alternate every time. Here is my question. In your tuning, starting with "D", do the notes just alternate up the scale? Is it a "D" scale, or is there an intricate placement of the notes, as I first described? And, what do you do when a string seems to be too low, at its highest point in relation to the string which is attached above it? Do you just readjust the tension on the string, pulling it up? These are just the starters. If you, or anyone else is interested in helping out, I would greatly appreciate it. I have wanted to learn to play the kora since I was in Senegal in 1966. I finally have one (I live in the boonies, and didn't really know I could even get one now). There is no one in these parts to help. Thanks. Peggy Nelson
